Civic Media & Youth Journalism
Overview: These programs give young people the tools to understand their communities and tell the stories that shape them. Rooted in culturally sustaining practice, these experiences blend reporting, narrative craft, and media literacy with a deep respect for lived experience.
Youth learn interviewing, issue analysis, ethical storytelling, and multimedia production .
Outcome: Through workshops and field reporting labs, students move from idea to publication: researching topics, gathering community perspectives, drafting and revising stories, and producing work that reflects their voice and vision. Their stories enter public conversation, strengthening local information ecosystems and elevating youth insight.
Youth Storytelling Labs
Overview: In these creative spaces youth explore identity, imagination, and voice through writing, performance, and multimedia expression. These labs are flexible, playful, and deeply youth-centered — designed to help students discover what they want to say and how they want to say it.
Outomce: Youth create stories, podcasts, photo essays, and short films rooted in identity, community, and lived experience.
Teaching Artist Residencies
Overview: These residencies bring me into your school or organization to co-create a customized storytelling or media arts experience with your youth. Residencies can focus on narrative writing, journalism, multimedia production, oral history, or interdisciplinary arts — always shaped by your community’s needs and goals.
Over several weeks, I collaborate with educators and youth to design and facilitate a project that blends artistic practice with real-world relevance.
Outcome: Students build skills, create original work, and contribute to a culminating showcase or publication that reflects their growth.
Community Memory Projects
Youth-led oral histories, neighborhood documentation, and public storytelling installations that preserve local culture and amplify community voices. Youth explore the stories, histories, and cultural knowledge that live within their neighborhoods. These programs center intergenerational dialogue, local archives, oral history, and place-based storytelling to honor community identity and collective experience.
Youth interview elders, map meaningful places, gather family or neighborhood histories, and curate multimedia materials.
Outcome: Their work often culminates in public-facing pieces — micro-museums, audio portraits, community exhibits, or digital archives — that celebrate the richness of local life.
Creative Technical Skill-Building
Media production, digital storytelling, design thinking, and workplace literacy aligned with creative workforce development.
These experiences center hands-on learning in audio, video, editing, design, and digital production — always grounded in narrative purpose and cultural context.
Youth experiment with equipment, software, and creative processes while building confidence in their ability to make something meaningful.
Outcome: Students learn how to plan, produce, and refine digital media. They create polished artifacts such as podcasts, photo essays, short videos, digital stories that demonstrate both technical skill and artistic intention.
